چکیده
T HE RESULTS presented in the first paper of this series confirm the observations of others that acute hypoxia frequently raises the pulmonary arterial pressure in normal man. This pressor effect cannot be solely attributed to an augmented cardiac output, nor can it be ascribed to an elevated left atrial pressure. It seems, therefore, to arise from a change in the dimensions of some portion or portions of the pulmonary vascular bed. Whether this change involves an alteration in the pulmonary blood volume has not been settled, since experiments in man and in animals have yielded conflicting results.1-8 The present study was designed to investigate the relation between volume and pressure by using two dissimilar methods. The first entailed measuring the central blood volume before and during hypoxia; the second involved recording the change in the relative weights of the two ends of the body when hypoxia was induced.

متن کاملBeta-glucuronidase activity in human female genital cancer.
In 1937 Marrian (1) described a reaction where by estriol glucuronide was hydrolyzed during its passage through mouse intestine. This action was ascribed to a $-glucuronidase.' In a series of ex periments, Fishman (2) and others (3) associated the activity of this enzyme more closely with the metabolism of glucuronic acid. The glucuronidase activity of mouse liver was increased following the ad...
متن کاملCarbon dioxide pressure-concentration relationship in arterial and mixed venous blood.
To calculate cardiac output by the indirect Fick principle, CO(2) concentrations (CCO(2)) of mixed venous (Cv(CO(2))) and arterial blood are commonly estimated from PCO(2), based on the assumption that the CO(2) pressure-concentration relationship (PCO(2)-CCO(2)) is influenced more by changes in Hb concentration and blood oxyhemoglobin saturation than by changes in pH. The purpose of the study ...

www.ajcconline.org • BACKGROUND Pulse oximetry is commonly used to monitor oxygenation in neonates, but cannot detect variations in hemoglobin. Venous and arterial oxygen saturations are rarely monitored. Few data are available to validate measurements of oxygen saturation in neonates (venous, arterial, or pulse oximetric). • PURPOSE To validate oxygen saturation displayed on clinical monitors ...
